Situated not far from Goulding’s Museum and Trading Post, which was owned by his friends Harry and his wife "Mike" Goulding, Monument Valley was another favorite target for Dad’s lens.

Its Navajo name is Tse bii ndisgaii, or "valley of the rocks." Although the valley is part of the old Paiute Strip, the western and northern sections were annexed to the Navajo Reservation by Executive Order in 1884. Parts were later restored to the public domain, only to be returned to the Navajo Nation by Congress in 1934.

Over the years, Dad shot a vast series of frames of the mesas, spires, and buttes that rise out of the majestic valley. This image conveys both his love of the place and his technical precision at maximizing depth of field.
