Reflecting the pride and dignity of the Navajo people, Dad continually strived to capture character traits as well as location. This photograph was taken against the sandstone cliffs of Canyon de Chelly in northeastern Arizona and is considered one of Arizona's premier canyons.

Its history includes one more example of man's inhumanity to man when in 1863, Colonel Kit Carson sent a detachment of soldiers under the command of Captain Albert Pfeiffer in the Canyon resulting in the surrender of the Navajos and their subsequent relocation to Bosque Redondo, New Mexico.
