This area in Monument Valley was the site of many noteworthy films by John Ford, starring John Wayne and Ollie Carey such as "Stagecoach" and "The Searchers." Although Ollie was not present when this photograph was taken, she was a long - time family friend.

Dad’s intent was most likely to capture the vast sweep of the valley floor and the mirror-like qualities of the clouds.
